Welcome
Welcome to 101 Things Every Girl/Young Woman of Color Should Know!

101 Things Every Girl/Young Woman of Color Should Knowwas born of the rib of both the book 101 Things Every Boy/Young Man of Color Should Know (Hotep Press, 2009) by my husband LaMarr Darnell Shields, and the groundbreaking documentary Men II Boys: 101 Things Every Boy/Young Man Should Know by Janks Morton, Jr. that was inspired by the book www.mentoboys.com .  It began as a conversation between my husband and me after watching the ascension of a little brown boy from the sands of Hawaii, to the halls of the Ivy League and ultimately the White House.  Our hearts cried out for other little brown boys and girls to know that they, too, could live their dreams!

After birthing two daughters and lastly a son, I knew that not only did he need to know some nuggets of truth from men who shared his heritage and story, but my daughters, and every little brown girl, needed to know how women of color navigated through the waters of life to become able, forgiving, loving, spirited and thinking mothers, wives, sisters, friends, and leaders!  It was all so innocent until urgency beckoned me to make this book a reality

101 Things Every Girl/Young Woman of Color Should Knowoffers advice, as well as a series of short stories in hopes of gaining the trust of young girls, all while laying a foundation to receive the genuine purpose of this writing.

For every brown girl, here are 101 Things You Should Know; your journey begins now!
